Since water is not found in its pure state in nature, it’s essential to determine certain parameters, before deciding to use a particular site or water source for fish farming.
These parameters include:
- Chemical characteristics
- Physical characteristics
- Biological characteristics
The three categories of parameters can be further broken down into:
- Dissolved oxygen content
- Hydrogen ions concentration (PH ) of water
- Water conductivity
- Presence of dissolved solids
- Ammonia content
Water bodies generally are dynamic in the sense that they have some form of internal circulation. The fact that many water bodies are moving makes samples collected at a fixed point subject to differences, therefore the need for periodic measurements.
