WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN FISH FARMING

WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN FISH FARMING

Since water is not found in its pure state in nature, it’s essential to determine certain parameters, before deciding to use a particular site or water source for fish farming.

These parameters include:

  1.        Chemical characteristics
  2.        Physical characteristics
  3.        Biological characteristics

The three categories of parameters can be further broken down into:

  1.        Dissolved oxygen content
  2.       Hydrogen ions concentration (PH ) of water
  3.        Water conductivity
  4.       Temperature
  5.       Presence of dissolved solids
  6.         Ammonia content

Water bodies generally are dynamic in the sense that they have some form of internal circulation. The fact that many water bodies are moving makes samples collected at a fixed point subject to differences, therefore the need for periodic measurements.
